About the event

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

The Loren Gildar Band charges gleefully through wild marshes of swampy soul, over sweet grassy hills of groovy americana and right into the thicket of thorny alt rock anthems. With expressive and skillful musicianship, insightful lyrics sung in 3-part harmonies and a rock-solid rhythm section, this 5 piece joins the audience for a joyful ride through sonic regions of the heart, mind and body.

The band is comprised of Loren Gildar, on guitar, keys and vocals; Yvonne Blackwell, lead and harmony vocals; Jackie Macri, harmony vocals, guitar, keys, harmonica, melodica and auxiliary percussion; Mike Mahoney on drum set and Juan Bossio-Garcia on Bass Guitar. The band has gathered its members from across the world including Tampa, FL; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Philadelphia and Upstate New York and the flavors of their hometowns have joined the party. Garnering comparisons to Paul Simon, Wilco, Elivs Costello and Weezer, this gathering of musicians is a trip.

"When every other band zigs, NYTROUS zags." That's as good as any way to describe NYTROUS, the Philadelphia-area band that has spent decades perfecting a singular sound. Drawing on a lifelong love of classic pop and rock — from the Brill Building tunesmiths and British Invasion acts of the 1960s to 1970s prog and glam acts like Jethro Tull, Crack the Sky, Renaissance, Genesis, David Bowie and Roxy Music — the group has conjured a sound that not only defies description, but comparisons.

NYTROUS plays what it alternately describes as “progressive pop” and “21st Century Classic Rock.” While their songs (generally speaking, Chuck writes the music and Lance the words and melodies, although Lance has also written many tunes by himself) are three-to-five minutes long and emphasize immediately catchy and memorable “hooks,” the arrangements are meticulous, adventurous and reminiscent of the great bands of the original progressive-rock era of the late-1960s and early-‘70s. Lance and Chuck also take pride in what they like to call “Nytrousizing” others’ songs. By that, they mean giving previously written —and familiar — tracks a musical makeover while keeping their lyrical heft and impact. Among these numbers are their shape-shifting version of Simon & Garfunkel’s “A Hazy Shade of Winter,” a rocking take on Bob Dylan’s “It Ain’t Me Babe,” and a bluegrass reinvention of Cyndi Lauper’s iconic “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.”

A highlight of Nytrous’ career was the 2014 release of “It’s About Time,” a seven-song CD that showcased the scope of the team’s composing and performing skills.
