About the event

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Ken Ulansey, Phyllis Chapell and Dave Posmontier have been blending their instruments and voices together for over 20 years, recording in each others many projects, mixing influences, and broadening each others musical outlooks. As a duo, they draw from traditions as diverse as the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Brazil, Ireland, India and, of course, the American songbook. Their travels through most of these cultures lend an authenticity to their music that's wonderful and rare!

Phyllis Chapell has spent her life developing a universal musical style singing “world songs.” Her repertoire includes songs in 13 languages from Brazil, Latin America, Europe, Africa and the Middle East, as well as American folk, jazz, originals and popular music. Phyllis Chapell has performed in concert throughout the U.S., Brazil, Latin America, and Europe. She has released multiple CDs.  She also performs with many other musicians/ensembles throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region, and has produced multiple videos. Phyllis Chapell has been named as one of the top 500 jazz vocalists of all time by Scott Yanow (Down Beat, Jazz Times and AllMusicGuide).  She has also won song competitions for her original music; and was chosen to be one of Indie-Music’s Top 25.

Ken Ulansey, Penn Council for the Arts winner, plays alto and soprano sax, penny whistle and clarinet. He is a musical chameleon, having played contemporary classical music with Relache—premiering new works by Philip Glass, Robert Ashley, among many others— jazz with his own award-winning band, latin with Synthesis and Minas, and folk music with most of the area’s and even the nation’s leading songwriters. Besides leading his own wedding band that specializes in swing, motown, klezmer, latin, pop, zydeco and oldies, Ken has toured extensively in Europe and the States, played on nearly three hundred recordings, and worked in collaboration with dancers, film-makers, poets and story-tellers.

Dave Posmontier has been playing keyboard since the age of seven and has played professionally since the age of 12. Dave has performed and recorded with many jazz artists including Christian McBride, James Moody, Chris Potter, Duane Eubanks, Mickey Roker, Bobbie Durham, John Blake, John Swana, Mike Richmond, Bootsie Barnes, Tony Williams (sax), Bob Howell, Chico Huff, Larry McKenna, Steve Giordano, Grover Washington Jr., David "Fathead" Newman, and Johnny Hartman. Currently, Dave is playing, composing, arranging, teaching, and participating in educational jazz concerts, workshops and clinics in schools throughout the area. Dave can be heard on several CD’s of Philadelphia area jazz artists and in 2010, released a CD, "Posterity" featuring his original compositions and arrangements. He has recently released a live acoustic trio CD, "Deep Pockets".
