About the event
ABOUT THE SHOW
“You’ve Got a Friend in Me: Celebrating the Music of Randy Newman,” a concert featuring more than two dozen songs by the Grammy- and Oscar-winning composer, will be presented Saturday, March 9 2024, 8 to 11 pm, at The Royal Music and Arts Center, 1 S Easton Rd, Glenside, Pennsylvania.
The songs reflect Newman’s wide range of musical styles, from heartbreaking ballads to raucous ragtime, from New Orleans shuffle to witty satires. Newman has been inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame.
The program includes tunes from Newman’s movie scores including “Toy Story” and “Ragtime,” his radio hits “Short People” and “I Love L.A.,” the enduring smash “Mama Told Me (Not to Come)”, and other pieces that earned Newman the title “America’s foremost musical satirist” from The Atlantic magazine.
Performers Paul Mamolou (vocals) and Ron Schaumburg (keyboards) will present tunes from all eras of Newman’s career, which spans more than half a century. For many years Mamolou has been a familiar face on the Philadelphia music scene as singer and guitarist with local favorites The Edge Hill Rounders (among other bands). Schaumburg is known to local audiences for his open mic performances and his work with the Beatles cover band Mother Nature’s Suns and Drunkard’s Dream.
The highlight of this one-night-only concert will be a complete performance of Newman’s 1972 masterpiece album, Sail Away, including the classic title track, along with the whimsical “Simon Smith and the Amazing Dancing Bear,” the haunting “Old Man,” and the raunchy “You Can Leave Your Hat On.”
Audiences who may not know Newman’s own recordings will certainly recognize the many chart-topping cover versions by artists ranging from Ray Charles, Harry Nilsson, and Joe Cocker to Linda Ronstadt, Art Garfunkel, and Three Dog Night.
