Excerpt from Phillymuze article:
“Picture this: It’s 2023. St. Vincent & the Roots cover Portishead's “Glory Box”. Beth Gibbons appeared on Kendrick Lamar’s last album. A fascination with reinterpreting retro aesthetics and all things born in the 80s and 90s sweeps the nation. All the conditions point towards a Trip-Hop revival.
In many ways, the wistful drear, pounding drums and basslines, gritty minimalism, and psychedelic bluesy-ness and jazzy-ness of Trip-Hop is the perfect soundtrack to the slow decline of western society. And there is nowhere more perfect than the charmingly gritty city of Philadelphia to be the backdrop for Trip-Hop 2.0.
Enter: Amélie Swann.
To stand out as vocalist upon this canvas takes a really special, almost spiritual ability to be alone with the instrumental, to project rawness and power, but also to be incomprehensibly cool and non-chalant about the whole ordeal. It takes equal parts vocal talent, stage presence, and x-factor.
Amélie takes this to another level, checking all the boxes of what makes this kind of music so enjoyable while adding her own flavor that pushes the whole genre forward instead of just being a tribute to the past. She delivers vocals with an intoxicating level of nuance and sophistication, all the while remaining effortless and flowing. Her vocal range and creative yet catchy melodies leave me wishing each song had a few more verses. Accessible to both the pop crowd and deep electronica heads, I see some epic club remixes in the future.”
