About the event
ABOUT THE SHOW
Our first Thursday songwriter shows follow a "in the round" format. Each artist will play an original song, giving the audience some background on the meaning, writing style, or whatever else they care to share about their music. After each artist performs one song, the first "round" moves on to the next. There are usually 5 rounds total, with a group performance at the end. Songwriter rounds tend to be very engaging, participatory, and educatiional in nature.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Bernie Gillespie has been performing locally for the past 25 years in various acts including Shady Groove Duo, Bear, B-Side Prophets, and Jason’s Children. He tends to write around quirky word-play and themes from his local childhood memories and the culture and surroundings he grew up in. Bernie also hosts the Royal open mic each week and is an avid volunteer and supporter of the organization since it's opening in 2021.
Marc Kaye is an avid writer and musician. He has been playing piano since age 7 and writing music since age 11. He was featured on WXPN for his song 'She Says’ and has performed in local concerts, both in person and most recently, virtually for over a decade. He takes inspiration from everyone from Beethoven through Simon and Garfunkel and Elton John through Tears for Fears. He blends memorable melodies with lyrics that are both confessional and raw in order to tell a story that resonates and treats both word and note as one symbiotic relationship.
Marc is also a touring stand-up comedian, writer and co-founder of VitalConex (www.vitalconex.com) that works with organizations on building stronger, more resilient teams and cultures.
Jason Paul Elder is a multi-instrumental singer-songwriter, whose music is centered around the 12-string acoustic guitar in a variety of melodic tunings and explorative characteristics. Originating from Philadelphia, PA, his songs convey a balance between spirituality, sensuality and sentimentality; seeded with a deep reverence for the eras of German Baroque, American Soul & New Wave, as well as that of the British Invasion. Many of Jason's songs have gotten airplay throughout the Tri-state area over the years, beginning with his first "one-man band" demo - along with playing out over twelve hundred live performances, thus far, both in solo and multiple accompanied forms. Overall, he sees the stage as a sacred place, regardless of size or location, and is dedicated by a lifelong aspiration in bringing happiness and insight to others through the vast world of songwriting.
While spending years roaming the United States mostly barefoot, lamenting that they never became ninjas, Cory Rooney and his brother Bryan realized their parents lied in saying they could be whatever they wanted to be. Their reaction was the perfect revenge, they formed a band the world knows nothing about - The Brothers Rooney. Like all the greats, it eventually fell apart and the brothers Rooney were no more. So this self taught vocalist and guitarist went solo. Writing and performing became his therapy, and the stage a place of transformation. A recipe for a great night, Cory Rooney brings 2 parts depressing 90s music, a dash of self deprecating humor, and a healthy dose of anxiety to the stage of the Royal. If his original works inspired by the alternative, progressive, punk rock of the 90s don’t entertain, his on stage presence definitely will.
